New York: A policeman stands guard in a hallway as students move to their classes at the Eastern District High School in Brooklyn's Williamsburg district April 8th on the first day of school after the Easter holiday. Eastern District is a microcosm of the problem in New York schools. The 61-year-old school, once virtually all Jewish, was built to accommodate 1,800 pupils; the school now has an enrollment of 3,000 students - 65 percent Puerto Rican, 25 per cent black and 10 per cent white.Photo measures 8.25 x 10.25inches.
