Supposing that you would be pleased to possess the autographs of the late President Polk & Governor Marcy, I now have the pleasure of transmitting them to you. With my kindest regards for your excellent father.

For his service in the American Civil War, William Watts Hart Davis (1820-1910) was brevetted a Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers, a rank awarded to him on March 13, 1865, ‘for gallant and meritorious services, during operations against Charleston, South Carolina.’ Outside of his military service, Davis worked as a journalist, author, and government official. He was also an avid historian and founded the Bucks County Historical Society. He wrote several books on topics ranging from local genealogy to military and political history.
