Offering this cool looking, early pipe from Custombilt. The pipe is a wonderfully stout author, it’s somewhat short and has a great profile. Custom-bilt started in 1929 by Tracy Mincer, and the name had the hyphen removed to become Custombilt in 1942. There is much information you can study about the various eras of production, and the variations on the stamps used to indicate when it was made and by which company, you can find some of that info on Pipedia. Based on the stamping it is likely during the Wally Frank era. On the Pipedia page you can see stamp 1, 3 and 5, so I was always wondering where is stamps 2 and 4? I’m guessing this would qualify for stamp #2, and would be the “other” Wally Frank era stamping. The Custom part is all connected in cursive style, and the top of the “C” arches to the top of the “t” so I just added this stamp on the Pipedia page. The bowl has got that well known deep rustication, which they originated, and is often copied. The bottom of the bowl has cross-bars of rustication, which was common on the earliest pipes marked Custom-bilt, so I think that helps date this as an early production era as well. This bowl is in excellent condition, has very light normal use showing, no noted issues. The interior of the bowl is very nicely seasoned, it draws easy with the draw hole bottom rear center. The stem is made of a good quality vulcanite, has very light wear, and is in great shape. Weighs in at about 2.0 ounces. It’s been reconditioned and is ready to smoke!
