An original 19th century watercolour by Henry Barlow Carter depicting ships on a stormy sea.


Biography:

Marine painter. Baptized Bermondsey 1804; his uncle was in merchant navy but there is no record he was ever in navy, as often claimed in dictionaries. Exh. RA 1827-30 from Plymouth, moved to Hull where taught drawing, later to Scarborough, and briefly Bath and Torquay. Largest collection of his work in Scarborough. Info. from G. H. Bell 12 04.
