“The father of `wearable art’ - Francisco Rebajes (1906-1990) immigrated to New York from the Dominican Republic in early 1920s. He was inspired by exotic cultures such as African figures, Pre-Columbian and Oriental forms.  His first objects, cut from cans and sold in the streets, were bought by the locals of Greenwich Village. This handmade approach was maintained through the years.

In 1934, Rebajes opened his first shop selling jewelry and objects d’art. Within 10 years he owned a factory and several New York shops of which the most famous was on Fifth Avenue. Rebajes ran the business until 1967, when he returned to Spain where he continued to make jewelry until the late 1980s. While Rebajes worked with a range of materials, he is best known for his work in copper, which predominated during the 40s & 50s.”
