America Bicentennial & the Spirit of '76 - Centennial, Wyo

The Spirit of '76 in the American West! Cover celebrating the American Bicentennial, July 4, 1976, at Centennial, Wyoming. The cover, which was produced by the Wyoming Bicentennial Commission, sports a cachet with the logo of the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and was signed by the Governor of Wyoming at the time, Ed Herschler. Edgar Jacob Herschler (October 7, 1918 - February 5, 1990), popularly known as "Gov. Ed", was the Democratic governor of the usually Republican U.S. state of Wyoming from 1975 to 1987. (Wikipedia)

The cover is stamped with the 10 cent crossed flags coil stamp (Scott #1519), and the 3 cent Wyoming Statehood 50th Anniversary stamp (Scott #897). The cover was canceled in Centennial, Wyoming, on July 4, 1976, with a "Happy 200th Birthday, U.S.A.!" pictorial cancel.

In the bottom right corner, the cover was stamped with one of the Declaration of Independence commemorative stamps (Scott #1691). It was canceled with the same cancel In Centennial on July 4. At the top of the cover "First Day of Issue" is stamped to note this was the first day of issue of the Declaration of Independence stamp.

Centennial, Wyoming, was named in 1876 in honor of the 100th birthday of the United States and is the first town in the United States with that name.
