Kosuge Chikudo

1895 (Meiji 28) – 1966 (Showa 41)

In 1895, he was born in Sado, Niigata Prefecture, and his real name was Uiichi. Around the age of 17 or 18, he began to self-study bamboo crafts, using Chinese flower vases and other items as models. 1912, he won first prize in the 1st Sado Products Exhibition (Arts and Crafts). 1920, he was appointed as a teacher at the Sado Aikawa Town Elementary School Industrial Supplementary School. 1924, he was appointed as a bamboo crafts teacher at the Niigata Prefectural Nagaoka School for the Deaf and Mute. 1945, he opened a workshop in Hanyu, Minamikanbara District, Niigata Prefecture. He passed away in Showa 41 (1966) at the age of 71.
