Selling here is a beautiful series of engravings by the French engraver Nicolas Chapron, under the supervision of Nicolas Poussin, depicting the frescoes executed by Raphael in the Vatican Loggias, first printed in Rome, 1649. Then as present here reprinted in Paris by Pierre Mariette, c1680. This copy has 'Petrus Mariette excudit' at the foot of the title scroll on the dedication leaf and the majority of the plates have the imprint 'Typis Petri Mariette Via Jacobea Sub insigne Spei' to lower margin.
The volume retaining forty eight of the fifty two engravings called for, plus the titlepage containing a dedication to Raphael, lacking the frontispiece.
Oblong folio, bound in 19th century gilt decorated and lettered half green morocco over marbled paper covered boards, upper board detached. Pale green endpapers period with the binding, fe's removed, pastedown with 20th century ink manuscript inscription.
The book measures 48cm by 35cm.
The contents are lacking the frontispiece and four of the fifty two engravings called for (No.s 31, 40, 43 & 48). Retaining forty nine beautiful engravings by Nicholas Chapron (including the illustrated titlepage).

Condition: Front board detached, lower hinge partially cracked, general wear and scuffing externally as seen. Engraved title leaf is laid down, general browning/foxing and dust markings/finger soiling throughout as seen, title more notably foxed and with repaired loss to margin upper right corner: some scattered ink spots and smudges, generally in good condition ( see images for further clarification). Front free endpaper creased and with tear lower centre.
