This outstanding, 19th century Pipestone Carved Pipe Bowl measures approx. 3 5/8" long overall and 2 5/8” tall and features a slightly tapered cone vertical element and a pointed, anterior end to the horizontal element. While the Bowl is not dated in any way, the quality of the carving and the significant and honest wear from decades of use, as well as the opinion of the experts at Cowan’s Auction, date the Bowl to the late 19th century.
This very rare and beautiful, ca1890’s Northern Plains / Sioux Catlinite Pipe Bowl is in very good condition. The Pipe Bowl is well preserved with no damage or repairs of any kind. There is some discoloration from use on the table of the bowl opening and at the opening where the stem would have been attached that is commensurate with use over many years. The honest wear and surface polishing from decades of handling and use attest to the fact that the Bowl was a treasured artifact of the original Sioux owner. The Bowl is carved from a single piece of Pipestone and is quite beautiful.
