Kumi Sugai (1919-1996)
Born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Western-style painter and printmaker. He began working in commercial design for Hankyu Corporation in 1937, and moved to France in 1952. From the 1970s onward, he began to paint works that were a combination of circles and straight lines, with a focus on elimination of waste. In his later years, he continued to paint the "S" series.
