Very rare and wonderful, ca1880’s Bronze, Figural Countertop Cigar Lighter / Smoking Stand in the form of a Revolutionary War period Sailor. This fantastic fluid fueled Cigar Lighter measures approx. 5 1/2” tall and 6” by 3 1/4” at the black marble base.

The Cigar Lighter Figure sits on a nautical capstan and wears the uniform of a late 18th century Sailor with flat cap, neckerchief and jacket with anchors on the lapels. The capstan sits on a polished, black marble base and to the right there is a hollow barrel which likely held wooden stick “dips” or perhaps matches that were used to transfer the flame from the Lighter to the end of a Cigar. The Sailor has a hollow cigar in his mouth that he holds with his left hand. The wick of the Lighter would protrude from the hallow cigar and the flat hat of the Sailor is hinged at the back allowing access to the reservoir of oil that fueled the Lighter in order that it might be filled with fuel. The Soldier holds the cigar that is in his mouth with his left hand and his right hand grasps the ankle of his right leg that is crossed over his left leg.

While we at Walnutt's Antiques do not have extensive, personal collections, one of the few things we do collect are these wonderful, Countertop Figural Cigar Lighters. The criteria we (and others who cherish this little beauties) is that the Lighter be 4" to 9" and be of the "cigar in mouth" type. This type of lighter is filled with fuel through the top - in this case the Soldier’s hat is hinged and can be opened to reveal the hollow interior. A wick was drawn through the thin "cigar" in the figure's mouth and the end of the wick was lit providing a long burning flame to be used to light the cigars of patrons in a Saloon, Barroom or Tobacco Shop. We happen to have an example of this Lighter in our collection or else this little fellow would have never made it into this auction!!

This charming, Figural Cigar Lighter is in excellent condition and displays beautifully. There is no physical damage or repairs of any kind and there is only light surface wear to the highest points of the casting. The bronze figure and drum container feature a fantastic, rich and warm surface patina and the Cigar Lighter displays beautifully!! Please see the scans below for a good indication of the wonderful form and outstanding condition of this charming, 19th century Cigar Lighter.

This type of Figural Countertop / Desktop Cigar Lighter would have graced the Bar in a 19th century Saloon or the Counter of a 19th century Tobacconist and would make a fantastic addition to any collection!!
