The albums compiled on this release are from the catalogue of Lee Lambert, a small but brilliant independent British jazz label of the 1970s. Founded by jazz enthusiast Howard Lambert as a means of creating further opportunities for UK jazz musicians to record, during its lifespan Lee Lambert released some fine examples of modern jazz, and two of the very best are heard here. Martin Drew is one of the most gifted jazz drummers of his generation, hence his tenure in Oscar Peterson’s group and his work with jazz greats such as Stan Getz, Count Basie, Johnny Griffin, Milt Jackson and George Coleman. Martin’s 1978 album ‘British Jazz Artists Volume 3’ sported an all-star line-up including John Taylor (keyboards), Bill Le Sage (vibes) and Ron Mathewson (bass), and they power their way through an electrifying set that includes Tom Scott’s funky Strut Your Stuff, Stevie Wonder’s Another Star, Milt Jackson’s Re-Rev, Thad Jones’s Child is Born and Jobim’s No More Blues. The quartet of jazz piano virtuoso Tony Lee is the subject of the 1979 album ‘Street of Dreams’, which also features Martin Drew on drums. Tony Lee and his musicians swing in Oscar Peterson fashion through numbers such as Neal Hefti’s Li’l Da rlin’, Henry Mancini’s Loss of Love, Cole Porter’s Love for Sale and the Rodgers & Hart classic My Funny Valentine as well, of course, as Victor Young’s Street of Dreams. Remastered from the original analogue stereo tapes. First time on CD.
