Tourmaline Gemstone Information

Tourmalines are part of an isomorphous series. A series in which a range of chemical compositions occur. Tourmaline can occur in any colour. And tourmaline gemstones are available in a huge range of colours. Single gemstones can show several colours and be cut to be multi coloured.

Tourmalines have a vitreous lustre. And range from transparent to opaque.

Some common names used to differentiate tourmaline 

• Rubellite = red
• Indiclite = dark blue
• Paraiba = electric blue's to neon green's
• Watermelon = multicoloured pink + green

Common Treatments

Heat treatment or irradiation can be used to enhance the colour of tourmaline. Green and blue gemstones can be lightened in colour by heat treatment. And some red shades can be intensified by irradiation.
