The Dutch magazine Wendingen was the expression of a group
of young architects, a subgroup of the members of the professional Dutch
association Architectura et Amicitia, which included not only architects and
engineers, but artists, skilled technicians and craftsmen. This magazine was
geared not just to members of the organization, but to those interested in
architecture and the graphic and decorative arts.
The first issue, edited by Hendrikus Theodorus Wijdeveld, was published in January 1918 with a limited print-run of approximately 150 copies. The title of the magazine, choosen by Wijdeveld, means "upheavals" and was taken from a quote by Nietzsche about - Umwalzung aller Werte - or upheaval of all values.
From 1918 until 1931, 116 issues of Wendingen were published. Most of the
issues had specific themes, with text limited to give more space to the
illustrations. Among the theme issues were 31 dedicated to Dutch architecture,
10 to the applied arts, 11 to sculpture, 10 to painting, 11 to graphics, and 8
to theater and dance. The variety reflected the artistic ferment during these
early years of Dutch modernism and the eclectic interests of the magazine's
editorial staff. Among the artistic influences on the magazine were the
Amsterdam School of art deco architecture and German expressionism.
Non-Dutch artists and art were also single subject
in some issues, for example: Frank Lloyd Wright, Eileen Gray, Hermann
Finsterlin, Gustav Klimt, Josef
Hoffmann, Antoine Bourdelle, Ossip Zadkine, Diego de la Rivera, Lyonel
Feininger, Eric Mendelsohn, Hungary, old Russian icons, old East Asian art,
Hindu Javaneese sculpture, European ceramics, Scandinavian architecture and
applied arts, kristals and minerals, Shells, woodcuts and prints, advertising,.
Wendingen was also important for its layout and typographic
design. The design was influenced by William Morris and by Japanese-style
bookbinding. The magazine's contribution to Dutch typographical art was its
close integration of text and decoration. The geometrically stylized typefaces
and decorative elements of Wendingen were
influential in advertising graphics and book and magazine covers throughout
Europe.
