Old ETCHED Carnelian bead

Etched carnelian and agate Dzi beads were crafted by many different people from different countries using carnelian and agate as the base stone and then these were fabricated with lines and circles using unique ancient methods which included darkening the stone with plant sugar and heating. They also bleached and etched the stone with white lines and used an alkali material called natron (calcium carbonate). Certain parts of the stone (bead) would have been left out by using either clay, wax or some type of grease. The actual ancient alchemic process can only be assumed. In this way the ancient people created the patterns by first bleaching the agate for Dzi and then darkening the patterns onto the bead. Finally the lighter pattern would be etched onto the bead. After this the hole would be drilled, which was a very arduous task with a bow drill which they used in ancient times. The smoothness and the absence of cracks in the stone still to this day cannot be fully explained.
Many of the Dzi and etched carnelian beads would have come to Tibet from other places. People from Tibet, Ladakh, Nepal, Bhutan and the surrounding areas cherish these sacred beads and pass them down generation to generation. Because of this these sacred beads have survived many thousands of years and would have been worn by hundreds if not thousands of different people. Sometimes shepherds and farmers pick these beads up while working in their fields or find them in the grasslands. One of the reasons that sometimes they can be found near the surface of freshly tilled fields is that people were often buried with their beads and long after the remains of the bodies have gone, the beads remain. Another reason is that the beads may have been lost many years ago as the cords that would have been worn around the neck would not have been as strong as the cords that we wear today. Many of these sacred beads have very small drilled holes and it would not have been possible for thick leather cord to be strung through them and before silk would have been available the ancient people would have used plant fibres which would have been very fragile and would have very easily broke.
The knowledge of these beads is often derived from spoken tradition which has been passed down generation to generation and even today there is great controversy concerning their source, the method of manufacture, their age and even the precise definition and understanding of the bead.
Ancient Roman, Bactrian, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Afghan, Yemeni and Indian carnelian and agate beads all made their way into Tibet.
