Asclepias speciosa - Showy Milkweed

Showy Milkweed looks very fancy, but it's tough and vigorous.  Huge clusters of fragrant pink star flowers stand above silver foliage on tall stems .  Each cluster is 4" to 5" across and is irresistible to Monarch butterflies, who lay their eggs on the stems and leaves.  This is THE native host for our western Monarch butterfly.

Asclepias speciosa does best in lean well-drained soil with almost no water  It's perfect for those areas beyond the reach of your hose and actually thrives on neglect. It's perennial in all zones 3-9.

Sow the seeds on the surface of moist, well drained soil and keep them warm.  Germination is quite slow.  Milkweeds come up on their own schedule, but they will come up.  Plant and ignore.

Each year the flowers will reseed themselves.  Just sit back and enjoy the butterflies.
