Brahea armata, known as the Blue Hesper Palm or Mexican Blue Palm, is a lovely palm that is native to California, and north-western Mexico.
Very distinctive and attractive plant, with large, blue/grey fan leaves that grow 1-2 metres wide with 1 metre long petioles. The leaves are persistent in nature, forming a shag around the trunk; in cultivation they are typically burned or cut off.
The trunk gets to about 50cm wide, although it only grows to about 12 metres tall.
The inflorescences extend out beyond the crown, reaching 5 metres in length.
Prefers full sun in a dry, very well drained situation. Very slow growing. Rarely seen in the tropics and sub-tropics, since it is usually too wet, and humid for them. Very frost resistant and hardy to -10 degrees C.
