"LOUGH REE, CO. WESTMEATH: 1 1/2 miles north of Athlone, Lough Ree extends
north for 15 miles and varies in width from 1 to 6 miles. This large expansion of the Shannon
is bordered on the west by Roscommon and on the East by Longford and Westmeath.
The shore line is pleasantly wooded and varies from deep bays to shallow inlets. Boating
trips may be made from Athlone to the numerous islands and Lough Ree is noted for its
course fishing, i.e. pike, perch and bream."
