LONDON, MIDLAND & SCOTTISH RAILWAY (LMS): 1930-1933 Patriot Class 4-6-0 DUKE OF SUTHERLAND TRAIN STAMP SHEET

A GREAT Gift Idea for the Locomotive & Railway Enthusiast (as well as Stamp Collector) and Ideal For Framing.  A 22.5 x 32.7 cms Complete Sheet of 50 Stamps of the 1930 LMS Patriot Class (4-6-0) comprising 25 se-tenant pairs of two genuine 1983 MINT/UNUSED 35c stamps from St Lucia in the West Indies (Issued 14th October 1983).  The first stamp illustrates the technical / plan drawings and the second stamp shows the locomotive at work.  The scans below show (i) a close up of the stamps and (ii) the complete sheet for sale.  The stamps are 31 years old but are in pristine unmounted mint condition.  The sheet would make an ideal present for the LMS / Patriot Class / Duke of Sutherland / Henry Fowler Steam Locomotive Enthusiast and is ideal for framing.

The Patriots were the result of a need by the LMS for express locomotives less powerful than their Royal Scot Class, but just as speedy (hence the discouraged nickname of Baby Scot).  They were designed by Sir Henry Fowler and built at the LMS Crewe Works.  In theory (and for accounting purposes) the early locomotives were rebuilds of the London & North Western Railway (L&NWR) Claughton Class, but it seems that only some parts and the names were actually used.  52 were built in total between 1930 and 1933.  The actual Duke of Sutherland was put into service in 1933.  Unfortunately, even though they survived until the 1960s, none were preserved.  However, there are plans afoot at the Llangollen Railway to build a new Patriot "The Unknown Warrior".

A Pretty Unique Item of LMS / Patriot Class / Fowler Steam Locomotive Memorabilia!
