"Danger in Centerfield" by Willie Mays & Jeff Harris - SCARCE Paperback - Published in 1963 by the American Sports Library - 151 pages - Very good plus condition. A flashy young rookie is called up in mid-season to play centerfield for the Kings. Unfortunately, not all his teammates are happy to have him on the team as someone is sending him threatening letters. This was part of a short-lived series of baseball themed mysteries published by J. Lowell Pratt & Co. under their Americal Sports Library banner, purportedly written by Major League stars, which included Whitey Ford, Roger Maris and Yogi Berra (but obviously ghosted by accomplished writers). This book, attributed to Willie Mays, was the only one in the series that dealt with racism, and a player who is dressed down by his manager for showboating and not giving 100%. In addition to the great story, there are mini bios of 21 all-time great outfielders who are enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Willie Mays' own tips on playing the outfield. There is some minor edge wear on the cover (see the scan) and a blank 1-1/2" x 3-3/4" sticker inside the back cover, but this book is still in very nice condition as you can see from the scan. No collection of Willie Mays items is complete without this SCARCE book.
