Of all the biblical images that inspire perseverance through
life's storms it is the event described in the Gospel of Mark chapter 4.
As Jesus and his disciples set out to cross the Sea of Galilee, they encounter
a violent, sudden storm. The disciples fear that the boat is in danger of
sinking and they are going to drown. Jesus meanwhile is sound asleep
below deck. The disciples arouse him and say, "Teacher, don't you
care if we drown?" Jesus then gets up, rebukes the wind, and says to
the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind dies down and the
sea becomes completely calm. This causes the disciples to ask each other,
"Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him."
Rembrandt's
1633 classic oil painting "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee" is based on
this story from the Gospel of Mark and the only seascape the artist
painted. It is interesting to note that in addition to the twelve
disciples and Jesus, Rembrandt adds a fourteenth person in the boat. Who
is this person? Many believe that it is Rembrandt himself and he is the
one looking up at the viewer. This is his invitation for us to also put
ourselves in the picture and trust Jesus to bring calm in our trials.
This print of
Rembrandt's famous painting measures 11" by 14" (not including white
trim) and is printed on non-glossy card stock. Ready-made frames and
matting are available to accommodate this size. There is a free download
of the picture from Wikipedia but the figures are too dark to appreciate
as wall art. For that reason, this print has been digitally enhanced so
that the figures in the boat can be clearly seen. It comes shipped in a
reinforced tubular container.
