Each photo measures 5" by 7" with a white border on all sides with the signature handsigned on the specially elongated bottom margin.
The photograph is from the 1939-1945 period and has been reproduced and then signed by Kapitänleutnant Alfred Eick. The photo is accompanied by a brief career history.
This signed photo forms part of a limited edition of U-boat Commanders signed Photograph Series many of whom were awarded the Knight's Cross for their actions. This is number S1 in the series. Each photograph has been handsigned and they are all numbered and certified on the reverse. Each photograph is a limited edition of 150.

Gerhard Bielig started his naval career in April 1934. From October 1937 he joined the U-boat force as an engineering officer. He was the Leitender Ingenieur (Chief Engineer) on three U-boats during the war and spent over 650 days at sea on combat patrols.  He served aboard U-20 commanded firstly by Kapitänleutnant Karl-Heinz Moehle (Knights Cross) and then Kapitänleutnant Harro von Klot-Heydenfeldt. In July 1940 he joined U-103 commanded by Korvettenkapitän Viktor Schütze (Knights Cross) and then under the command of Kapitänleutnant Werner Winter (Knights Cross). His final operational U-boat was U-177 under the command of Korvettenkapitän Robert Gysae (Knights Cross). During his time aboard U-177 he saved the U-boat three times after heavy depth charge-attacks and for this action received the Knight’s Cross in February 1943. After leaving U-177 he served as instructor in the 2nd U-Boots-Lehr-Division (ULD - U-boats training division) and from December 1944 in the Agru-Front (technical training group for front U-boats).

U-103  07.1940 - 12.1941  IXB  5 patrols, 253 days
U-177  24.03.1942 - 16.10.1943 IXD2  2 patrols, 310 days.
