Royal Mail Submarine stamp cancelled on First Day of Issue with Official BFPS 2628 postmark for the 10 April 2001

JS(CC)67 RAF cover showing a Coastal Command Vickers Wellington of No 36 Squadron over a German Type VII U-Boat bearing a single Royal Mail Submarine stamp cancelled on the first day of issuie with our BFPS sponsored postmark for the Centenary of the Royal Navy Submarine Service 1901-2001.

This cover has been personally signed by Warrant Officer Stanley Walter Layzell.

On the night of the 7th January 1944 Layzell was wireless operator on Wellington HF245 of 36 Squadron when it attacked U343. At 50 feet flak from the U-boat set the port wing on fire and the aircraft was forced to ditch. The pilot and navigator died with the survivors being picked up ffrom their dinghy by the Polish destroyer 'Slazak' the following day.
