This is one of the 1860s color prints sold by Christie's September 1987. It was part of lot 385.
On
the 23rd and 24th September 1987 the world famous auction house
Christie's sold a vast collection of color prints by Kronheim & Co
printed circa 1860 by the Baxter process.
Alfred
Ernest Owens was a collector of many things as was the 'norm' for the
new wealthy industrialists of the early 20th century. Owens
and his new wealth purchased New Hall in Birmingham in the early 20th
century and started to fill it with his many collections. From
an archive of his purchase records, he started to purchase
Baxter prints by at least 1908 and an entry for 9th July 1919 shows that
a figure of £90 was
paid to P F Bullivant, a Baxter dealer and member of the then Baxter
society, for "commission on Kronheim print parcel purchased from John
Dickinson Ltd of Hemel Hempstead".
The
Christie's sale was over two days and on the first day 3 of each of the
sheets (sheets 26-28 - 2 sheets), now cut in singles and framed, were
offered in lots of 3 or
4 followed by a complete sheet framed and then another unframed.
This is one of the singles framed by Christie's in 1987.
