it was difficult for us to date and determine this statue, we are not specialists - please do judge for yourself age, origin and depiction by having a close look at the pictures, but we think this is:


an authentic antique, 19th Century, bronze statue from Indonesia

it might be a:

Sacred Burial Figure of a noble man's son

or a 

Hindu Deity with a relation to the Serpent / Snake / Naga and Bilva leaves


we see a cire perdue / lost wax form bronze stele with a standing figure,

the plate behind the figure has on each side a snake / serpent, head down, with multi forked tongue coming out his mouth

the plate it is topped with leaves - perhaps Bilva leaf - as being the back part of the serpents

 the plate goes all the way down and is fastened to the pedestal at 2 points ( see 9th picture)

the figure wears a broad spreading nobleman's lotus crown,

long, leaf shaped ear ornaments / jewelery,

bracelets on each upper arm and wrist,

a breast ornament / breastplate, as son's of raja's wear as regalia for dancing,

the shape of the frontal ornament is also known as jewelry of the people from Flores and Sumba

the arms are bent, the left arm supports the right hand, in which a leaf,

the skirt has an exceptional tail like design with 5 strips,

 with ornaments, perhaps Jewels, attached to it or gold thread, to keep the parts together and allowing movement (dance),


provenance: the former owner, a Dutch NATO official, received this statue in the 1970's during a trade mission in Indonesia - many years later an antique dealer told him it was statue from East Java and representing a Hindu Deity
