He is shopping for neckties and the ties he is holding in his hand are tattered just as his clothing is but notice the ties above are not tattered. The words used in this piece are in French. No other special information about this painting's history is known.

The overall condition is very good. There are a few minor creases along the border on each side. This piece is done on canvas and has been rolled.
