Background

While the importance of the Bauhaus is widely understood, Czech avant-garde design of the same period remains under-appreciated.

Partly by virtue of its location in the heart of Europe, Czechoslovakia benefited from the free flow of progressive ideas – and absorbed Cubism, Dada, and polemics from Bauhaus, Dutch De Stijl and Russian Constructivist circles - to forge a distinctive contribution to the modernist avant-garde.

This was most dynamically expressed in mainstream book design – typography, cover design and layout – which, because of the political conditions prior to the late 1980s, is only now being properly assessed.

Druzstevní práce

Druzstevní práce (in English, Co-operative work) was a subscription based Czech publishing house that had gained popularity among the Czech middle classes in the 1920s for its consciously forward looking stance.

Sutnar become its principle art director in 1929, bringing his visionary approach to design to bear on all aspects of its output.

Condition

The condition is very good. Czech popular novels of this period are notoriously fragile items and I would rate this as an excellent survivor. Internally it is clean and t
he binding is sound. The wonderful red black and white cloth cover is in very good condition, clean and bright. There is no dust jacket.

Payment and Postage

Paypal is accepted and I do not add a surcharge to cover their fees. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible for overseas customers to pay by another means, such as bank transfer, by prior arrangement.

All buyers please make contact within 3 days of auction. Payment is required within 7 days. If you can't see the postage price for your country please wait for me to send you a Paypal invoice.

Shipping prices are calculated at cost and include tracking and full insurance. In order to comply with eBay's buyer and seller protection programmes, tracking and full insurance are mandatory for items of value.

Non-payment

All non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. This is not done out of anger, or for the sake of being vindictive, but because eBay charges retrospective fees calculated on the actual sale price of items and this money needs to be retrieved. Believe me it is hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please refer to eBay's policy on non-payment for more information, including its ramifications for the bidder. If you have any doubts, please do ask before bidding.

Condition of items

Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique objects and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs.

Vintage electrical items

Unless clearly stated otherwise in the description, vintage electrical items are sold in their original condition so should always be safety checked by a qualified electrician before use.
