The impact and discovery site of the meteorite Campo del Cielo is located in the extensive area of the Gran Chaco,
which extends from southern Bolivia to Paraguay and to the northeastern end of Argentina. Parts of this meteorite were first discovered in 1576. He then sent out an expedition that brought back several fragments. The site, a waterless plain, was appropriately named Campo del Cielo (Field of Heaven). Approx. 200 years later the Spanish sent another expedition because it was suspected that some of the fragments contained silver.
However, the Indians' reports were not believed because the Spanish assumed that the metal came from an ore mine. Apparently a naval lieutenant found a fragment that he estimated to be 15 to 18 tons. However, since examination of the material revealed that it was only iron, it was left behind. The fragment was never recovered in subsequent, later expeditions.
In 1992, an American meteorite dealer was temporarily arrested while trying to transport away the heaviest fragment ever found, weighing 37 tons (!!). The dealer had purchased the meteorite from a local who claimed to be the rightful owner of the fragment. However, the Argentine authorities did not agree to this and the meteorite remained in the country.
The total amount of meteorite material found so far is over 100t. The larger fragments are found around an area of 26 craters. The largest crater has a diameter of 78 m and a depth of 5 m.
The age of the craters was determined by radiocarbon testing of petrified wood found near the craters. Accordingly, the meteorite impact is said to have occurred 4,000 to 6,000 years ago.
The original asteroid came from the asteroid belt and the fragments are classified as Group IA coarse octahedrites. Chemical composition: 92.6% iron, 6.68% nickel, 0.43% cobalt, 0.25% phosphorus, 87 ppm gallium, 407 ppm germanium and 3.6 ppm iridium.
Meteorites (iron meteorites) as a healing stone
help relieve nervousness, cramps and muscle tension.
In addition, the meteorite has a stabilizing effect on the immune system.
It doesn't matter which iron meteorite it is.
