An illustrated catalogue of 103 objects in an exhibition held in London, Glasgow, Leicester and Bath 1983-4 illustrating Russell's work as a designer of objects, interiors, surfaces and Professor of Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art and Pepler's modernist textile designs.

The Architectural Association trained architect Marian Pepler was also a renowned textile designer.  In the 1930s the Gordon Russell workshops turned to Marian for progressive designs for carpets and rugs.

From 1927 Gordon Russell’s younger brother Dick trained as an architect to relieve Gordon from the drawing board by 1930. Eventually, Russell & Sons became Russell Workshops, and then Gordon Russell Ltd.

The firm made high-quality domestic furniture, developing its own style, with Dick Russell designing simple pieces with flush surfaces for small-scale machine production that presaged Modernism.

Marian and Dick Russell had met at the Architectural Association Schools where they both studied architecture. They were married in 1933.

The book is in very good used condition with only very minor signs of use and a light mark on the back cover. Extremely rare and a wonderful reference on Gordon Russell, the firm, a key company in the history of twentieth-century British design that links the Arts and Crafts movement to Modernism.

Payment and Postage

Paypal is accepted and I do not add a surcharge to cover their fees. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible for overseas customers to pay by another means such as bank transfer in GBP£ by prior arrangement.

Non-payment

All non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. This is not for the sake of being vindictive, but because eBay charges retrospective fees calculated on the actual sale price of items and this money needs to be retrieved. It's hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please refer to eBay's policy on non-payment for more information, including its ramifications for the bidder.

Condition of items

Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs.

Vintage electrical items

Vintage electrical items are sold in their original condition without electrical guarantee, so must always be safety checked by a qualified electrician (in the country of intended use) before use.
