In 1978, Heritage Models merged with Custom Cast and released its Star Trek figure line and a complimentary set of game rules, Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier. The figure line included characters from the Original Series and the then-recent Animated Series. 31 blister packs were planned and at least 22 were produced. Each pack contained 4 to 6 human-scaled figures. Most of the figures were 25 mm tall, meaning humans stood about one inch tall. 

Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier Role Playing Game was principally set on unexplored planets within the United Federation of Planets Star Fleet. Most player characters were assumed to be members of Star Fleet, engaged in planetary exploration missions. They typically held senior posts on a starship bridge, and visited alien planets as part of landing parties. For the most part, the game's rules were set in the original TV series era (a.d. 2260s) and Star Trek: The Animated Series TV series but emphasizes "dungeon-crawl" exploration (combat, traps and so on) over Star Trek's themes of space exploration and alien contact. Because of the simplicity of the game's structure, all of the supplements, regardless of their "era", could be easily re-set to suit a different era. The game system consists of a single rulebook in 1978, revolves around Landing Party based missions, and includes no rules for starships or ship-to-ship combat. It was created primarily to support Heritage Models' line of Star Trek 25mm lead miniatures.

No additional supplements were released for the game, but two Fan-written works (published years apart) in "Different Worlds" magazine would add additional rules to STAGFF to make it more like the series upon which the game as based. STAGFF was the first licensed Star Trek RPG product.
