In the National Football League, the team captain designation is a team-appointed position that designates certain players as leaders on and off the field. The captains program was implemented by the NFL Player Advisory Council established by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in conjunction with the NFL Players Association. Starting in 2007, the league began permitting teams to name up to six players as captains.
Players who have been named a team captain typically have a "C" patch on their jerseys. There is a standard design used by all teams participating in the captaincy program. The patches are in team colors and are worn on the front left or right breast (depending on other patches, etc. worn by the specific team). The number of stars filled in on the patch represents the number of consecutive years that player has been named captain by that team. If they've been named captain for longer than four years, the "C" on the patch is gold. Some teams (i.e. Baltimore and New England) do not have this patch on their jerseys but still designate captains. The New York Jets have not designated team captains since an incident involving Santonio Holmes in a 2011 game. In the 4th quarter of the final game of the 2011 season against the Miami Dolphins, Holmes appeared to get into an argument with Jets offensive tackle Wayne Hunter while the team was huddling. As a result of the argument, Holmes was benched for the remainder of the game, and the Jets ended up losing the game, which resulted in the Jets missing the postseason for the first time in 3 years. His leadership qualities and credibility as a captain have since been questioned.
During special recognitions, the patch may be a different color; e.g., pink for breast cancer awareness; or camouflage for military service recognition. Because of the nature of the game, most teams include their starting quarterbacks as Offensive Captain.

Drew Christopher Brees (born January 15, 1979) is an American football quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). After a prolific college football career at Purdue University, he was chosen by the San Diego Chargers with the first pick in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He left college as one of the most-decorated players in Purdue and Big Ten Conference history, establishing two NCAA records, 13 Big Ten Conference records and 19 Purdue University records. He remains the Big Ten record-holder in virtually every passing category, including completions (1,026), yards (11,792) and touchdowns (90). Brees started his career with the San Diego Chargers, earning the starting job in 2002 and making the Pro Bowl in 2004. Nine months after suffering a bad dislocation in his shoulder joint and a 360 degree tear of his labrum and rotator cuff, Brees signed with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent, where he met immediate success, earning eight trips to the Pro Bowl and leading the Saints to their first Super Bowl in Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts. Since joining the Saints in 2006, he has led all NFL quarterbacks in touchdowns, passing yards and 300-yard games. Brees has passed for over 5,000 yards in a season four times; no other NFL quarterback has done so more than once. He has led the NFL in passing touchdowns four times, and in passing yards a record six times. He was the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year in 2004, the Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and 2011, and the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV. Sports Illustrated named Brees its 2010 Sportsman of the Year.

The New Orleans Saints will induct late owner Tom Benson into the franchise's Ring of Honor during halftime of Sunday's season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "The New Orleans Saints and the city of New Orleans meant so much to my husband," said Saints owner Gayle Benson in a new release. "He was so proud of them and wanted the team and the entire region to be admired worldwide. He was also grateful to our fans for their commitment to the Saints. That passion and support of our fans inspired him to give back to the community like he did. His impact will always be felt and this is a great way for our organization and our fans to honor his legacy." Benson will join kicker Morten Andersen, linebacker Rickey Jackson, quarterback Archie Manning and tackle William Roaf in the Ring of Honor.  Benson owned the team from 1985 until his death March 15 this year. The franchise is finding several ways to honor the late owner as the team will wear patches on their uniforms and will unveil a Benson-themed bar inside of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday.

Multi-colored “C” patches as part of the NFL’s expanded “Crucial Catch” efforts to support the fight against cancer. In previous October games during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cowboys’ team captain wore pink “C” patches. The pink stripes on this year’s multi-color patches represent the Cowboys’ continued support of Susan G. Komen, the organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives. Komen’s founder, Nancy Brinker, attended Sunday’s game along with breast cancer survivors who proudly held a large pink ribbon that adorned the playing field during halftime ceremonies. The other colors in the striped patches represent the Cowboys’ and NFL’s initiative to expand the “Crucial Catch: Intercept Cancer” campaign to address multiple forms of cancer. Money raised by the league’s campaign will be directed towards support of three screenable cancers: breast, colorectal and cervical.

The NFL Color Rush was a promotion done in conjunction with the National Football League (NFL) and Nike that promotes so-called "color vs. color" matchups with teams in matchup-specific uniforms that are primarily one solid color with alternating colored accents, primarily airing on Thursday Night Football. Despite being promoted as color vs. color, some games had one team wearing traditional white uniforms, either by choice or out of necessity. The uniforms did not count against each team with regards to their allowed alternate uniform allotment. The games have received mixed responses from fans, with some praising the NFL for changing up their games in terms of uniforms, while others criticize the promotion for some of its garish uniforms. On April 10, 2018, the league announced that Color Rush would be discontinued under the terms of the new Thursday Night Football broadcast contract. The exact terms of the discontinuation will be decided upon at the spring owners' meeting in May; tentative plans are for teams to be allowed to continue to use their existing Color Rush uniforms as standard third jerseys.  .
