wooden food pounder

carved with a wonderfully sculpted head at the top,

from the

Sepik River region

in the north part of Papua New Guinea - PNG, Melanesia

we would say it is not a drum stick for a slit drum / garamut or a war club, but

a pestle to squash sago / saksak / rabia / sagu, taro / kalo

the carved head shows bulbed eyes, inlaid with red beads,
an elongated nose,
carving to the sides of the nose, that represent an upwards nose ornament,
a cap-like headress with an ornament to the front,
a curved liniar decoration at the grip-position

age unknown

length: circa 44 cm / 17.3 inch

weight: circa 1050 gr

condition: very good, firm & solid

some other terms: penu punder, pestal, masher, triturator, stamper, sago club, colocasia esculenta, taro stossel

we would like to underline the fact that, we are not connoisseurs or experts on the subject of tribal art, we have done some research, trying to attribute this object to a land, country, tribe or people, to the best we could. The age, if given, is only the age to our opinion, you might disagree. Do judge yourself the tribal affiliation/origin and correct age before bidding or buying. So we sell “as is” and we will not accept returns if the buyer finds that we are wrong concerning these matters and the way we described age or origine/affiliation
