About the Book
Wilhelm von Kügelgen was born in 1810 at Breslau (now Wrocław) in Silesia where his father was a government official in the ministry at Berlin. He grew up in Breslau where he went to school until 1824 when he began studying art under Johann Gottfried Schadow at Dusseldorf Academy. In later years Kügelgen became a successful painter and portrait painter; he also wrote many articles for newspapers on art history or art criticism, as example on Impressionism. When he reached old age, he wrote an autobiography that became very popular with readers throughout Germany.
