This is a rare March 25th, 1940 program (playbill) from the return engagement of the CHARLES L. COOKE, DAVE GREGGORY and WILLIAM TRACY musical "HOT MIKADO" at the Nixon Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (The production opened March 23rd, 1939 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City and ran for 85 performances before going on the road.) ..... With lyrics and music by Sir WILLIAM S. GILBERT and Sir ARTHUR SULLIVAN, the show was based on their comic opera "THE MIKADO", but with "modernized tempos". The musical starred BILL "BOJANGLES" ROBINSON as "The Mikado" and featured MAURICE COOPER, JAMES A. LILLARD, FREDDIE ROBINSON, MAURICE ELLIS, ALICE HARRIS, ROSETTA LE NOIRE, PEARLE HARRISON, JOHN JACKSON, ROSE BROWN and LARRY SEYMOUR ..... CREDITS: Book and Lyrics by W. S. The front cover features JOHN GARFIELD, who would be appearing in the play "HEAVENLY EXPRESS" the following week at the Nixon Theatre ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a light vertical fold and minor edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
