The Dwekh Nawsha (Syriac: literally "one who sacrifices") is a military organization created in mid 2014 in order to defend Iraq's Assyrian Christians from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and possibly retake their lands currently controlled by ISIL. Unlike the NPU which is independent of the KRG and Peshmerga, the Dwekh Nawsha operates in coordination with them. Despite being led by the Assyrian Patriotic Party, most militiamen are not members of the party. Several foreign fighters have joined the Dwekh Nawsha; they include Americans and Australians. The unit took its graduation ceremony on March 12, 2015.

Muslim militias aren’t the only forces taking on the Islamic State group as it continues its spread across Iraq. Christians driven from their homes in Mosul by the fighting have also formed their own brigade, battling alongside anti-ISIS Muslim militias in hopes of exacting revenge and taking back their city. "[They] displaced us from our houses, they took our money, killed our young men and women and they took our properties," the group's commander, Rayan Al-Kildani, told NBC News. "Therefore, Christians decided to fight the terrorists of ISIS." The militia, about 1,000 men strong, calls itself the Bablyon Brigades. It is the only Christian formation within the Popular Mobilization Forces, which is an almost exclusively Shiite umbrella of brigades backed by the Iraqi and Iranian governments to fight ISIS. The Babylon Brigades formed in June 2014, immediately after Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, fell to the Sunni extremist group.

The Dwekh Nawsha militia on the road to the front line in the Nineveh plain, north of Mosul, Iraq. It is the armed wing of the Assyrian Patriotic Party formed to protect Christian villages. It fights alongside Peshmerga forces against ISIS. As of November 2014, the militia had forty fighters, with about two hundred volunteers waiting to join.
