About Furoshiki
Furoshiki is a near square, reusable “wrapping and carrying cloth” used for centuries in Japan. In a traditional Furoshiki, two sides are sewn and the other two sides are selvages. (Some modern Furoshiki may be sewn on all four sides.)
Unlike ordinary containers such as boxes,
baskets, and bags, Furoshiki changes
its shape depending on the object to be wrapped. It can wrap boxes, bottles, jars, cans,
dowels, balls, etc. It is also used as a
shopping bag for groceries and as extra cloths when the weather changes
suddenly. It could be used for interior
decoration, too. You would be amazed
what one piece of cloth can do in our every day life.
After it is used,
it can be folded into a very small size to fit even in a pocket or in a small
purse, waiting for the next occasion to be used soon. By using Furoshiki, we could reduce waste and save our resources.
Furoshikis made from silk, acetate or rayon fabric are not usually machine- washable. ( Please dry-clean.) While cotton, polyester, or nylon Furoshikis are machine washable.
There are several popular sizes of Furoshiki.
Small (about 20 inches) for lunch box wrapping, usually cotton
Medium (about 27 inches) very popular size for wrapping things, such
as a wine bottle, iPad, etc.
Large (about 36 inches) very popular size for wrapping things and
carrying groceries.
XL (about 42 inches ) carrying a large item
2XL (about 52 inches) carrying a larger item
3XL (70 inches) or larger for wrapping or covering furniture, mostly cotton. ( Two pieces of rectangular fabric are sewn together to make a large square piece.
