Offering an unusual early piece of 19th century
tinware, a tin oil lamp filler. I believe it to be Shaker-made from Canterbury, N.H.. Can be identified on page 50, "Shop Drawings of Shaker Iron and Tinware", by Ejner Handberg. Constructed in tin,
oil can lamp filler with a precise narrow angled long tube shaped funnel-like side
spout with a cap top and a gracefully curved large ear shaped handle with a
carefully seamed back, intended
for use in filling early whale oil lamps. Form follows function - the funnel-like top
allows for easy filling from a larger container, the delicate small opening
spout makes for precise direction of whale oil into small openings of lamp
fonts. The handle's shape &
placement allows for good balance while pouring. The narrow angled
side spout and handle are soldered on, the tin cap does come off easily and
sits evenly. The tin lamp pitcher can is in good antique condition, it has a
darkened old tin patina, some dings and dents on its cap with no cracks, holes or repairs. Some rust areas at bottom underside of can. The lamp filler
has an untouched patina and retaining a fair amount of the original tinning. The lamp filler
stands about 6- 1/2" high by 7” across the bottom, top cap measures 1-3/4”
wide. I have
seen this form, which is near perfection with a bold body and delicate
fittings, attributed as being Shaker made. Display on your
hearth, next to a whale oil lamp.
