LIFE SCOUT RANK PIN

Life is the second-highest rank attainable, above Star and below Eagle. Life is awarded when the Scout serves actively in the troop, team or crew, serves in a position of responsibility for six months, and performs six hours of community service. A Scout must also earn five merit badges (at least three of which must be required for the rank of Eagle) for a total of 11, including the six previously earned. Finally, the Scout must pass a Scoutmaster conference, and board of review. The Life Scout Rank is earned after completing the Life Scout requirements and after earning the first five Scouts BSA ranks: Star Scout, First Class, Second Class, Tenderfoot and Scout rank. It is the sixth of 7 possible ranks in Scouts BSA.

Life was originally lower than Star, and originally required earning five specific merit badges concerned with health and fitness (First Aid, Lifesaving, Public Health, Personal Health and Athletics). The ranks were switched in the 1920s, following a decision to recognize the five-pointed star as a symbol of the five badges needed to earn that rank. The Life heart came to symbolize achievement in health and fitness, as the First Aid merit badge was required for both Life and Eagle until 1972, when it became required for all ranks above First Class.

In 1919, Ken Stange established a company bearing his name as a premier emblematic jewelry manufacturer, providing recognition awards to fraternal organizations throughout the United States. Then, as now, manufacturing awards of unsurpassed quality and offering excellent customer service are the foundation of the Stange Company.

As the company grew, Stange expanded into manufacturing recognition awards for non-profit organizations and Catholic religious orders. Stange Company's reputation as a provider of highly intricate custom jewelry resulted in the commission to manufacture the Order of Solomon, considered one of the most intricate insignia ever produced. Today, Stange Company creates and manufactures insignia, medals and decorations for several heads of state and dignitaries including the State of Jordan, Queen Elizabeth II, and the King of Rwanda.

Modeled after the Stange 1 medal, 1968-1970

In 1968 the Boy Scouts contracted with a second manufacturer to make the Life medals along with the Robbins Company. This type is somewhat rare and is actively sought among collectors.

This auction is for a vintage Boy Scouts of America pin for the rank of Life Scout Medal made by the Stange Co. It is marked with the Stange mark, "S" inside a square. 

This collection belonged to a life-long Scouter who passed away in 2000. He earned his Eagle award about the age of 17, which would make it around 1959 (ish). He spent his life devoted to Scouting serving as Scoutmaster and at Boy Scout summer camps for over 15 years in positions from counselor to eventually camp director.

He was a ten year member and Vice President of the local Volunteer Fire Co., ten year member of the area Hazardous Materials Response Team and the town Tax Payers Association and was an Eagle Scout with Gold & Silver Palms, one of the highest ranks in Scouting.

A bronze palm represents five additional merit badges, a gold palm 10, and a silver palm 15. 1 gold palm and 1 silver palm = 46 total merit badges (21 required + 25 additional) 

I cannot divulge his identity because I don't have the family's permission, nor sufficient background information on him.

Condition: This handsome award is in excellent condition for being around nearly 50 years old. It has only the slightest tarnish from age. It is marked "STANGE". Note: Due to quantity available, the item you receive may be similar but not be the exact item pictured.
