1880s BEADED AMERICAN PLAINS INDIAN SHEATH / HORSEHAIR TIN CONES/ PRE-1830 KNIFE
ANTIQUE ORGINAL MULTI-COLOR BEADED AMERICAN PLAINS INDIAN SHEATH
WITH TIN CONES AND HORSEHAIR TASSLES ~ CIRCA 1880’s
WITH PRE-1830 G CROWN R MARKED J. RODGERS STAG KNIFE
This is an authentic American Plains Indian 3 color beaded sheath on
Indian tanned rough out hide, circa 1880’s. Note that the knife is a much
earlier date, and is hot stamped G crown R, Joseph Rodgers & Sons, Cutlers
to His Majesty, and the famous Rodgers Hallmark. 10 1/4” overall with a
triangular shaped 5 3/8” blade. Weight
is 4.4 ounces. This mark is pre-1830 when the King of England was King George
IV. This early hand forged Sheffield knife was probably a captured knife, as
trade knives tend to be bigger and more functional such as dressing game,
skinning hides, et al. The blade was probably from a cutlery set at one time
and has changed shape several times, such if the blade was broken, along with
being sharpened extensively. This knife shows much aging and cracks in the stag
handle that is hollow on the pommel end. The fit of the ricasso into the overlapping
stag demonstrates this is simply a piece of tapering stag that was stuck on the
tang of the knife and secured with a small pin from the top to the bottom. Stag
is very porous and has shrunken away from the pin head on one side, also shrunk
significantly on the right side creating a large crack. The age of this knife,
i.e., pre-1830, suggests this knife was used for decades and decades, and
handed down for generations. The knife sheath is 7 ½” long x 3” and made with a
rough out hide outer shell with a leather liner and hand stitched together with
sinew. With close examination with a jeweler’s loupe, the sinew stitches can be
seen with a curled edge, and most have multiple striations that look lines
miniature strands of thread. The front is fully beaded in decorated in
geometric patterns in white, green, and dark blue beads. Note these early style
seed beads and are of uneven dimension and size. The top hanging loop has
remnants of red dyed porcupine quill decoration. The center of the sheath has a
row of decorative small tin cones with horsehair tassels. 3 of the original
tassels are missing but could easily be replaced if desired. The tip of the
sheath has 2 strands of hide that are split into 3 thin strands at the ends. Note
that these old, beaded sheaths have probably sheathed several different knives
in its lifetime as American Indians would put any old knife in any old sheath. Overall,
in fine, untouched, as found condition decades ago, and this knife has been
with this sheath for many decades.
