Cold Steel - Katana Mantis Religious

Cold Steel - Katana Mantis Religious

Religious Mantis is a symbol of cunning and power in Japanese culture and is therefore a highly respected subject in samurai swords.

Built on the new Hanwei L6 / Bainite blade in the Shobu Zukuri style with Bo-Hi, and with excellent «koshirae», the «Praying Mantis Katana» is a highly desirable and functional piece.

The dim green silk «ito» and the dark brown of the lacquered saya provide a beautiful contrast with the dark and gold copper accents of the «tsuba», «fuchi» and «kashira».

The stalking mantis seeks its next prey, reflecting the power and grace in this exceptional Katana.

Bainite is a high carbon steel structure that combines high strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. It has been known as an exemplary component of Katana’s leaf for several years, but its use has been restricted to a few first-class blacksmith masters due to the difficulties involved in performing the demanding heat treatment procedures necessary for the production of a bainite leaf in combination with the very hard «Martensita Yakiba» (edge section) required for Katana leaves.

Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process, using steel billels for L-6 tools (a very resistant steel with high carbon content and low alloy) as a starting point for this katana. The leaves are forged and molded in the traditional way, then treated with heat carefully to achieve the required structures of Bainita and Martensite before final polishing.
