Fort of DOUAUMONT

Built in 1885, in rubble masonry and covered with a concrete shell from 1887. The most modern and powerful armor fort. The Kronprinz called it: "The angular northeast pillar of the permanent fortifications of Verdun."

Occupied by surprise on February 25, 1916, it was recaptured on October 24, 1916 The 321 RI, Division "La Gauloise" (General Passaga), was the first to enter from the East Face of the fort and planted the French flag on the ruins of the superstructure, after having captured or driven out the defenders.
