On a trip to investigate traditional Chinese weapons near Shanghai, the Cold Steel team visited a respected collector who was in possession of an ancient Wu Jian sword, also known as a Battle Sword. The appearance and warrior aura of this sword were so unique and impressive that this was reason enough for Cold Steel to want to bring a reproduction of this weapon to the customer.

Made by talented blacksmiths, the battle sword is made from Cold Steels’ finest Damascus steel. It has a wide and symmetrical tip and a blade a little wider and heavier than usual. The double-edged blade, sharpened like a razor, is better suited for cutting than for pushing, due to the resulting frontal weight.

The knob and protection made of blackened iron frame the beautiful rosewood handle and are lavishly decorated with a filigree decoration made of traditional Chinese flowers and peony leaves. The same motif is repeated on the hood, mouth plate and matching rosewood sheath support rings.

The term Damascus steel, Damascus steel, or simply Damascus describes a composite steel made of two or more different types of steel. The name is derived from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered the ancient fortress and origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a high-carbon hard steel and a low-carbon soft steel are joined by repeated welding to the fire and folding. Carbon-rich steel ensures higher hardness, better temperability and greater edge retention, while softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and greater resistance to breakage. With this technology, which emerged in an era of poor and changing steel qualities, you can combine the positive properties of different steels. Due to the different colors with variable carbon content, impressive patterns of the alternating layers are created. Not only by these patterns, the Damascus swords of the Middle Ages were attributed an inherent magic.
