In the early years of the Chinese People's Republic, commodities were in short supply under central planning and ration coupons were issued and used up to the 1990s for some items.  They are called "Piao Zheng" (Pyao Jeng) in Chinese.  There were ration coupons for grains, oil, meat, sugar, eggs & vegetables.  They were also used for cloth, shoes, thread, coal, soap, matches, wrist watches and bicycles.

There were also coupons for Special Festivals and holidays, senior citizens, prisoners, patients and women who had just given birth.
