During 1978, the Environmental Protection Agency, through its Eastern Radiation Facility, began sampling radon in drinking water.
Over the next two to three years, approximately 27 states were included in this pilot study, which aimed to determine the need for a nationwide study of radon in drinking water; demonstrate the feasibility of such research; and to develop a limited database on radon in drinking water throughout the country. The water resources sampled during the pilot study were, in many cases, sampled due to known or suspected elevated radon levels or for convenience reasons, leading to arbitrary or random outcomes. For the most part, government medical personnel were able to sample any type of water free of charge, including private wells and wells not used for drinking water.
The results for drinking water have been summarized and published in another publication.
These include private wells, public surface water, public water supplies (can include both groundwater and surface water), and public groundwater — all state and US averages (geometric averages).
The results of the pilot study will not be discussed in detail in this report due to the statistical uncertainty associated with most of the data.
The subject of this report is a nationwide study developed from this pilot study. The nationwide study, which began in November 1980, was designed to systematically collect water samples in all 48 contiguous states.
The results of the study will be used in collaboration with the EPA's Office of Drinking Water (ODW) to assess public exposure across the country and to support possible future standards for radon, uranium and other naturally occurring radioactivity in public water supplies.
