Aaron Charles Rodgers (born December 2, 1983) is an American football quarterback for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). Rodgers began his college football career at Butte College in 2002[1] before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley to play for the California Golden Bears, where he set several career passing records, including lowest single-season and career interception rates.[2] He was selected in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Packers.[3] After backing up Brett Favre for the first three years of his NFL career, Rodgers became the Packers' starting quarterback in 2008. In 2010, he led them to a victory in Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers, earning the Super Bowl MVP. He was named Associated Press Athlete of the Year in 2011,[4] and was voted league MVP by the Associated Press for the 2011, 2014 and 2020 NFL seasons. Rodgers has led the NFL five times in touchdown-to-interception ratio (2011, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020);[5] and five times in lowest passing interception percentage (2009, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020);[6] three times in passer rating (2011, 2012, 2020),[7] touchdown passing percentage (2011, 2012, 2020),[8] and in total touchdowns (2011, 2016, 2020); twice in touchdown passes (2016, 2020)[9] and once in yards per attempt (2011) and completion percentage (2020).[10] Rodgers is third on the NFL's all-time regular season career passer rating list, with a regular season career passer rating of over 100 (the first to ever have a career rating over 100) while also having had the highest passer rating, the best touchdown to interception ratio and the lowest passing interception percentage in NFL history throughout the entire 2010's decade. In the postseason he is second in touchdown passes, fifth in all-time passer rating, and sixth in passing yards. In the regular season he has the best touchdown-to-interception ratio in NFL history at 4.66,[11] holds the league's lowest career interception percentage at 1.4 percent[12] and the highest single-season passer rating record of 122.5.[13] Rodgers is considered by many sportscasters and players to be one of the greatest and most talented quarterbacks of all time.[14][15][16][17] Rodgers is also a four-time winner of the Best NFL Player ESPY Award. Outside of football, Rodgers has a minority ownership stake in the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). In 2021, with him as a minority owner, the Bucks won the 2021 NBA Finals.[18]

In the National Football League, the team captain designation is a team-appointed position that designates certain players as leaders on and off the field. The captains program was implemented by the NFL Player Advisory Council established by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in conjunction with the NFL Players Association. Starting in 2007, the league began permitting teams to name up to six players as captains. Players who have been named a team captain typically have a "C" patch on their jerseys. There is a standard design used by all teams participating in the captaincy program. The patches are in team colors and are worn on the front left or right breast (depending on other patches, etc. worn by the specific team). The number of stars filled in on the patch represents the number of consecutive years that player has been named captain by that team. If they've been named captain for longer than four years, the "C" on the patch is gold. Some teams (i.e. Baltimore and New England) do not have this patch on their jerseys but still designate captains. The New York Jets have not designated team captains since an incident involving Santonio Holmes in a 2011 game. In the 4th quarter of the final game of the 2011 season against the Miami Dolphins, Holmes appeared to get into an argument with Jets offensive tackle Wayne Hunter while the team was huddling. As a result of the argument, Holmes was benched for the remainder of the game, and the Jets ended up losing the game, which resulted in the Jets missing the postseason for the first time in 3 years. His leadership qualities and credibility as a captain have since been questioned. During special recognitions, the patch may be a different color; e.g., pink for breast cancer awareness; or camouflage for military service recognition. Because of the nature of the game, most teams include their starting quarterbacks as Offensive Captain.

This is the first to feature a 17-game regular season schedule as the league expanded the regular season from 16 games.[1] The regular season started on September 9, 2021, with defending Super Bowl LV champion Tampa Bay defeating Dallas in the NFL Kickoff Game. The regular season is scheduled to end on January 9, 2022. The playoffs are scheduled to start on January 15 and will conclude with Super Bowl LVI, the league's championship game, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on February 13.
