Most commonly found on cantilever brakes and some older style V-brakes from brands like Shimano.
This style of nutless brake pad is found on most styles of older bikes including Mountain Bikes, Hybrid Bikes, Tandems, Folding Bikes, Cyclocross and Touring Bikes that use cantilever brakes. It is rare that they would be fitted on a Road Bike.
Fitting and Maintenence:
First of all remove your old pads and wipe down the brake components that remain attached to the frame or fork. This can be done with an old rag and a spot of bike cleaning fluid (like Muc Off or Fenwicks). Then give the rims a wipe down and don't forget to rinse.
This should remove any old brake dust that has been blasted over your bike every time you pull the brakes on.
Now you can fit your new pads.
Once you have the brake pad loosely fitted into the brake arm you can start to line up the pad with the rim. It is easier to do this with some tension being taken up by the brake cable so if you are fitting new cables too I would fit them first.
It is important to get the pad body central on the rim. You do not want the rubber to foul the tyre in any way, nor do you want half of the pad falling off the rim towards the spokes. Both styles of incorrect fitting will age your tyres and pads with un-even wear and could even cause a blow out which can be quite dangerous.
Therefore you should line up the pad in the middle of the rim.
Now repeat this for the other side and then adjust your cable tension to suit how you like the brake to feel. Setting the cable quite tight will require feathering the brake lever for any sort of braking, setting the cable tension so it is more slack will require more pull on the brake lever.
