" With great pleasure and pride Swiss Post presents the world's first embroidery stamp.

World premiere: the first embroidered stamp

Something which no-one has so far been able to do will become a reality: Swiss Post will issue the world's first authentic embroidered stamp on 21 June 2000. This limited edition 5 franc stamp is authorized for cancellation and is dedicated to St. Gallen embroidery.

By launching the world's first authentic embroidered stamp, Swiss Post is again demonstrating its courage of innovation. In addition to intensive development work and substantial investments, high-tech equipment and modern production processes were needed to make the idea of a textile stamp a reality.

The special «St. Gallen embroidery» stamp (CHF 5.00) will appear in a limited edition and will be available as of 21 June 2000

The unique stamp was designed by Peter Hostettler, who works as a textile designer at Bischoff Textil AG, St. Gallen, which is also responsible for the stamp's production. The stamp will be presented to the public for the first time on the first day of the national stamp exhibition naba 2000 in St. Gallen (21-25 June, OLMA).

With the introduction of this new product, Swiss Post is pursuing two goals: firstly, it intends to promote philately and an interest in stamps with particularly attractive issues. Secondly, an essential component of its issuing policy is to present attractive motifs and interesting topics in an appealing artistic form on stamps.
