The 1800 type was introduced in 1969 for use on the Isesaki Line express "Ryomo". Initially, it was designed with the same performance as the 8000 type with a 4-car train, but in 1973 2 intermediate cars were added to make it a 6-car train.
In 1991 the express "Ryomo" was replaced with a new 200 type train, and the 1800 type was remodeled into 300 type and 350 type with the addition of dynamic braking. Along with the remodelling, an electric nickname indicator was attached to the front, and the headlights and taillights were changed to the same square shape as the 1800 type final expansion car.
