Engraved print: "The Tinted" Venus

This full length statue of the goddess Venus is a reduction of John Gibson’s most famous work, the Tinted Venus, a polychrome marble statue which was a commission from Mr and Mrs Preston of Liverpool (now at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool). Venus is depicted holding a robe over her left arm and a ball in her left hand, and she stands on a circular base on which a tortoise can be seen reaching out from underneath the bottom folds of her robe.

Gibson worked on his Tinted Venus between 1851 and 1856. It was shown with another two polychrome statues of Pandora and Cupid Tormenting the Soul at the 1862 International Exhibition in London, inside a Greek temple that was designed especially for the event by the architect Owen Jones. By presenting a wax tinted sculpture Gibson intended to defend his argument and understanding of Greek polychrome sculpture however when the statue was unveiled in London it sparked a controversy. According to the Sculptor’s Magazine in 1863 it was considered ‘one of the most beautiful and elaborate figures undertaken in modern times’ but the Cornhill Magazine stated in 1862 ‘Approach the statue any hour of the day and you will hear a merciless running fire of remarks against it.’

The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
