“The Crater or Meteorite Crater” are just two of the names given to this famous crater. It is located in the United States, in Coconino County, Arizona. Location near Winslow, AZ. Today, the Crater is owned and operated as a private tourist attraction by the “Meteor Crater Enterprise”. It is Illegal to hunt or remove any article near the Crater or on their land. Just as it is Illegal to hunt on BLM and Private land.

There are many articles and published reports containing information on the famous Crater and its Meteorites. The Crater was discovered in 1891. The Fall Date is reported at 20-50,000 years ago. Upon analyzing a meteorite it has been classified and named as:

Type: IRON, or IRON OCTAHEDRITE
Group: IAB-MG
Official Name: Canyon Diablo

It was during the Pleistocene time that this event took place. No humans lived in North America at that time but animals did. Mammoth Horses and Giant Sloths. A small Asteroid 130 ft. across entered Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of 26,800 mph. The enormous pressures formed the huge crater. The explosion equivalent to a 2.5- megaton bomb (2.5 million tons of TNT) sent debris raining.
In 1902 Daniel M. Barringer, an attorney, geologist, and mining engineer filed a claim on the land. He worked on the Crater trying to find a main mass until his death in 1929.

Canyon Diablo Meteorite, created a CRATER so extensive in depth and circumference, 1 mile wide and greater than 600 ft. deep. Originally 1,200 ft. deep it filled about halfway from debris and rubble. Yet the meteor upon impact left ton’s of meteor debris and tens of thousands of pieces strewn for miles circling the massive crater and away from the crater’s rim. Scientists and meteorite hunters from around the world have found or purchased pieces of this famous Meteorite material.
